A newly unveiled mural in Mashhad has sparked fresh questions over the fate of Iran’s new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei, after his portrait appeared alongside figures believed to have been killed during US-Israeli airstrikes.
The mural, revealed at a public event attended by officials of the Islamic Republic, features Mojtaba Khamenei among several prominent Iranians said to have died during the attacks. His father, Ali Khamenei, also appears in the artwork.
A mural is a large painting made on a wall, often created to honour people, tell a story, or share a public message.
Videos of the unveiling have spread widely on social media. In the footage, a large screen is removed to reveal the mural, showing images of senior military and political figures killed during the ongoing war.

Rumours about Mojtaba Khamenei’s health have circulated since March and April, with some reports suggesting he was seriously injured or incapacitated in the strikes. Israeli-linked sources have claimed he may be in a severe condition and unable to govern.
Mojtaba Khamenei has not appeared in public since he succeeded his father following his death in a US-Israel strike on February 28, the first day of the war. Since then, his statements have only been issued in written form through state media.
Iranian officials, however, have repeatedly said he is safe or recovering, and there has been no formal announcement of his death.
In Iran, murals are often used to honour those killed, but they can also include symbolic or living figures as part of state messaging. Such imagery is sometimes intended to project unity or resilience.
