The Strait of Hormuz is currently closed to commercial traffic. While there was a brief attempt to reopen the waterway on April 17 following a ceasefire in Lebanon, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reversed this decision less than 24 hours later.

All you need to know, News18 explains.

Hormuz: What is the current status?

The situation remains extremely volatile with conflicting reports from Washington and Tehran:

April 17: Iran’s Foreign Minister announced the strait was “completely open" for commercial vessels during the ceasefire period.

April 18: Iran officially closed the strait again, citing the continuation of a U.S. naval blockade on its ports as a breach of ceasefire terms.

April 19: The IRGC reiterated that the strait remains shut and warned that any vessel approaching will be considered “cooperating with the enemy" and targeted, according to Al Jazeera and other reports.

How has it impacted shipping?

Marine tracking data shows hundreds of tankers and commercial ships turning back or anchoring outside the channel due to the sudden closure.

Multiple reports have surfaced of Iranian gunboats firing on merchant vessels, including Indian-flagged tankers, that attempted to transit during the confusion.

Security experts from BIMCO and other maritime bodies have advised all shipping to avoid the area due to the high risk of sea mines and targeted strikes, BBC reported.

US-Iran: The diplomatic standoff

The closure is tied to a “transactional" dispute between the US and Iran:

  • US President Donald Trump insists the US naval blockade on Iranian ports will remain in full force until a final peace deal is “100% complete."
  • Tehran maintains that the strait will not remain open as long as the U.S. blockade continues, viewing it as “maritime robbery" or “piracy."
  • The UK and France have announced plans for a multinational mission to protect freedom of navigation and conduct mine clearance “as soon as conditions allow."

KEY FAQs

Is the Strait of Hormuz open or shut currently?

As of now, it is effectively shut/blocked, with maritime traffic halted due to renewed Iran–US tensions.

Why is it being closed and reopened repeatedly?

Because of a volatile standoff between Iran and the United States, including blockades, ceasefires, and failed negotiations—leading to cycles of temporary reopening followed by re-closure.

What does this mean for oil and global markets?

The strait carries about 20% of global oil supply, so disruptions cause price spikes, shipping chaos, and global economic uncertainty.
