The most significant example dates back more than six decades, when Washington supported an invasion aimed at toppling Fidel Castro’s government.

US President Donald Trump’s fresh warning suggesting that the United States could “take over Cuba almost immediately" after its military operations in Iran have revived old questions about Washington’s long and often turbulent history with the Caribbean nation.

While the statement has drawn attention for its boldness, history shows that previous US attempts to directly control Cuba ended in swift failure and long-term geopolitical consequences.

Cuba In Trump’s Strategic Lens

Trump’s latest comments come alongside an intensified US pressure campaign against Havana. His administration has already expanded sanctions targeting key sectors of the Cuban economy and threatened action against foreign entities dealing with the island nation.

The broader strategy, according to US officials, is aimed at forcing political change in Cuba, reducing communist influence in the region, and tightening control over energy flows in the Caribbean. The approach has also been shaped by developments in neighbouring Venezuela, where US-backed actions have disrupted oil supplies that Cuba depends on, worsening fuel shortages and blackouts on the island.

History Of Failed Intervention

However, Cuba is not new to US attempts at regime change or control. The most significant example dates back more than six decades, when Washington supported an invasion aimed at toppling Fidel Castro’s government.

In April 1961, Cuban exiles backed by the US landed at the Bay of Pigs with the expectation of triggering an uprising against Castro. The plan collapsed within days as Cuban forces quickly overwhelmed the attackers, capturing around 1,100 fighters and forcing a retreat within just three days.

Far from weakening the Cuban leadership, the failed operation strengthened Castro’s position domestically and became a major diplomatic setback for the United States.

Cold War Fallout

The consequences of that failure extended far beyond Cuba. The attempted invasion pushed Havana closer to the Soviet Union, setting the stage for the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. That confrontation brought the world to the brink of nuclear war before a last-minute diplomatic resolution between Washington and Moscow.

Since then, the US has relied primarily on economic sanctions, diplomatic isolation, and covert pressure rather than direct military action. Despite decades of restrictions, Cuba’s political system has remained intact, even as its economy has struggled under prolonged embargo conditions.
