Israel’s military claimed that its initial strike on Iran killed 40 senior commanders along with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Israel shared a new video, which showed the Israeli Air Force striking targets belonging to what it called the “Iranian terror regime" in Tehran as part of ‘Operation Roaring Lion’. “Over the past day, the IAF conducted large-scale strikes to establish aerial superiority and pave the path to Tehran," the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said.

In another video, the Israeli military showed its air force striking two F5 and F4 fighter jets at the Tabriz airport in western Iran as they were preparing for takeoff.

Apart from Khamenei, Iran’s defence minister Aziz Nasirzadeh and the chief of staff for its armed forces Lt Gen Abdolrahim Mousavi were both killed in the US and Israeli attacks on Iran on Saturday. Major General Mohammad Pakpour, who led the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran’s Defence Council, were also killed.

Over 200 people have been killed in the attack as 24 of Iran’s 31 provinces came under attack, according to Iran’s Red Crescent. Iranian officials said the attack killed over 100 girls at an elementary school near a military base.

Israel’s military on Sunday claimed that its initial strike on Iran killed 40 senior commanders along with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani told journalists that the operation targeted two locations over a thousand miles from Israel and was carried out in broad daylight, calling it as the “first step" of the campaign.

Khamenei’s death has led to celebrations and mourning in several parts of the world. Several countries have condemned his killing as a violation of international law. Iranian cleric Alireza Arafi has been selected as a member of Iran’s Leadership Council to appoint Khamenei’s successor.
