A Jamaat-e-Islami leader and Dhaka-17 constituency candidate, SM Khalekuzzaman, allegedly hurled abusive remarks at Bangladesh Army personnel when he was stopped from entering the Dhaka Cantonment while accompanied by an armed guard.

According to sources, Khalekuzzaman was intercepted by Military Police at a cantonment checkpoint after attempting to enter the high-security zone with weapons.

Army personnel informed him that, in line with security protocols, no individual is permitted to enter the cantonment carrying weapons or accompanied by armed guards.

A video of the incident, which has since surfaced on social media, shows Khalekuzzaman engaging in a heated argument with army officials.

One of the individuals accompanying him is heard identifying him as a Jamaat-e-Islami candidate. Despite repeated explanations from officers regarding security restrictions, Khalekuzzaman appeared visibly agitated and challenged the decision.

During the confrontation, he allegedly made abusive remarks against the army and accused the forces of favouritism.

At one point, he is heard saying, “In Tarique Zia’s case, you clean the roads with your tongue—so why can’t we go?"

He further accused the military of politicising state institutions and pushing the country towards instability for personal interests.

Khalekuzzaman also demanded to speak to the army chief.

While that request was not granted, he later spoke to a senior officer over the phone. He is also heard instructing his associates to record the incident, saying, “Film it, they are not letting our vehicle pass."

Army personnel are heard assuring him of his safety inside the cantonment while firmly reiterating that weapons and armed escorts are not allowed under any circumstances.

Khalekuzzaman, however, claimed that he and his party members could face attacks from rival groups if forced to remain outside the cantonment area.

Following the incident, Khalekuzzaman addressed the matter in a post on his verified Facebook page, describing the episode as a “misunderstanding." The Bangladesh Army has not yet issued an official statement on the incident.
