Harris has not yet confirmed whether she will seek the presidency again in 2028.

Harris has previously served as the state’s Attorney General
Kamala Harris will not be running for the post of Governor in the 2026 elections, the former Vice President confirmed on Wednesday, July 30. In an official statement, Harris finally put an end to widespread speculation regarding her political future. “After deep reflection, I’ve decided that I will not run for Governor in this election," Harris said.
There had been considerable uncertainty over Harris’s next move following her defeat in the 2024 presidential election, where she ran as the Democratic nominee against Republican candidate Donald Trump. After the loss, her team indicated that Harris would take time to consider her political options, whether to contest for the Governor’s seat in California or prepare for another presidential bid in 2028.
“For now, my leadership — and public service — will not be in elected office," she stated, adding, “I look forward to getting back out and listening to the American people, helping elect Democrats across the nation who will fight fearlessly, and sharing more details in the months ahead about my own plans."
Although Harris has not yet confirmed whether she will seek the presidency again in 2028, her announcement removes her from the list of likely contenders in the upcoming California gubernatorial race. Until now, she had been viewed as a frontrunner among Democratic hopefuls to succeed current Governor Gavin Newsom, who is ineligible to run for a third term.
According to a Bloomberg report, Democratic donor Charles Myers believes Harris should make another attempt for the White House. “She only had three months last cycle to run a full presidential campaign," Myers noted, pointing to her potential for success with more time to prepare.
Harris has a long history in California politics, having previously served as the state’s Attorney General and later as a US Senator. She was chosen as Vice President under President Joe Biden and replaced him as the Democratic nominee in 2024 after Biden withdrew due to health concerns.
With Harris stepping back from the governor’s race, attention now shifts to other Democratic figures, including Katie Porter, a former congresswoman from Orange County, who is considered a strong contender for the role.
