Kamikaze Dolphins Claim: The speculation traces back to reports that Iran had previously acquired trained dolphins from the Soviet Union
Unusual claims that Iran may be training “kamikaze dolphins" to attack naval targets sparked curiosity and scepticism, prompting a response from top US defence officials. At a Pentagon briefing, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth dismissed reports suggesting Iran could deploy marine mammals equipped with explosives to target ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

“I can’t confirm or deny whether we have kamikaze dolphins, but I can confirm they don’t," Pete Hegseth said, rejecting the claims. The remarks came after reports suggested that Iran might consider using dolphins fitted with mines to strike US naval vessels and commercial ships amid escalating tensions in the region.
Where Did Claims Come From?
The speculation traces back to reports that Iran had previously acquired trained dolphins from the Soviet Union, allegedly capable of identifying enemy submarines. Such claims have resurfaced as tensions rise between the United States and Iran over control of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments.
What Did Pentagon Say?
During the briefing, General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, also downplayed the reports, jokingly comparing them to “sharks with laser beams"- a pop culture reference highlighting how far-fetched the idea sounds. Pete Hegseth echoed the sentiment, indicating there is no credible evidence to support the existence of such a programme.

The claims have surfaced at a time of heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, where the US has launched operations to ensure safe passage for commercial vessels amid concerns over Iranian threats. The region remains on edge, with both sides warning of consequences if hostilities escalate further.
