A Lebanese journalist was killed in an Israeli airstrike on a house in southern Lebanon where she had taken shelter while reporting on the conflict, the Associated Press (AP) reported on Wednesday.
According to AP, Amal Khalil, a reporter with the daily Al-Akhbar, was killed in the strike in the village of al-Tiri. She had taken cover in the house after an earlier airstrike landed near the vehicle she was travelling in with a colleague while covering the Israel-Hezbollah conflict.
Rescue Delayed Amid Continued Fire
AP reported that the initial strike in the area killed two people, following which Khalil and her colleague Zeinab Faraj moved into the house for safety. A second strike then hit the same location.
Rescue workers were able to reach Faraj, who was seriously injured, and retrieve bodies from the first strike. However, attempts to reach Khalil were halted after Israeli fire in the area, forcing teams to withdraw, according to AP, citing Lebanese authorities.
Khalil remained trapped under the rubble for several hours before Lebanese army units, civil defence teams and the Red Cross managed to reach the site later in the night. Her body was recovered shortly before midnight, nearly six hours after the strike, AP reported.
Israel Denies Targeting Journalists
Israel’s military said individuals in the village had violated the ceasefire, posing a threat to its forces. It denied targeting journalists or blocking rescue efforts and said the incident is under review.
Lebanon’s Information Minister Paul Morcos condemned the killing, calling it a violation of international and humanitarian law.
Rising Toll On Journalists
Khalil had been reporting from southern Lebanon since 2006 and was covering Israeli operations in border villages at the time of her death. According to AP, her killing brings the number of journalists killed in Lebanon this year to nine.
The incident comes amid ongoing hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, which resumed in March, and ahead of fresh talks between Israeli and Lebanese officials on extending a ceasefire.
The conflict has led to over 2,300 deaths and displaced more than one million people in Lebanon since early March.
