Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam says Lebanon will implement a ban on Hezbollah’s military activities and that the state has demanded the group hand over its weapons. The PM also said that Lebanon was ready to start negotiations with Israel.

The statement comes as tensions escalate between Israel and Hezbollah. Israeli fighter jets recently carried out airstrikes on Beirut, Lebanon’s capital, after Hezbollah launched rockets and drones towards a military base in Haifa in northern Israel.

The Iran-backed group said the attack was meant as retaliation for the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and described it as an act of defence for Lebanon and its people.

In an official statement, Hezbollah said Israel’s continued military actions and the killing of its members and supporters justified a response at a time and place of its choosing.

The group also warned that Israel could not continue its prolonged military campaign without facing retaliation, calling on Israeli forces to end their operations and withdraw from what it described as occupied Lebanese territories.

“The resistance leadership has always affirmed that the continuation of Israeli aggression and the assassination of our leaders, youth and people gives us the right to defend ourselves and respond at the appropriate time and place," said the official statement.

“The Israeli enemy cannot continue its 15-month-long aggression without a warning response to halt this aggression and withdraw from the occupied Lebanese territories," it added.

According to Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency, the Israeli airstrikes on Beirut left at least 31 people dead and 149 others injured.
