Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) promised no mercy for Republicans who dare to defy President Donald Trump as he weighed in on Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy’s (R) shocking primary defeat during Sunday’s “Meet the Press.”
Trump’s hold on GOP voters proved to be alive and well as Cassidy, one of the handful of Republican senators who voted to impeach him for inciting the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection, plodded to a third-place finish after polls closed on Saturday. Trump’s preferred candidate, Rep. Julia Letlow (R-La.), and State Treasurer John Fleming will compete in November’s runoff.
Trashed by Trump as “a disloyal disaster” and “sleaze bag” in an election day Truth Social post, Cassidy’s loss makes him the first Republican Senate incumbent to lose renomination since 2012.
During Graham’s appearance on “Meet the Press,” he told moderator Kristen Welker that Cassidy’s ouster was a proper comeuppance for trying to “destroy” Trump’s political career.
“He voted to impeach President Trump, which would have ruined his political life. He could have never run for office again,” the South Carolina senator said, adding that any politician who dares to “stand in the way” of the MAGA agenda will be defeated.

— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) May 17, 2026Predicting the same fate for Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie (R) once his state’s ballots are tallied Tuesday, Graham said, “You can disagree with President Trump, but if you try to destroy him, you’re gonna lose because this is the party of Donald Trump.”
The senator went on to warn there was “no room” in the Republican party for anyone who reaches across the aisle to challenge Trump.
“If you align with Democrats to stop his agenda like Massie does, you’re going to lose,” he said. “If you align with Democrats to drive him out of office, like Cassidy did, you’re going to lose.”
Though Graham framed Cassidy’s loss as a menacing example of what happens to Trump turncoats, the erstwhile senator’s fellow Bayou state Republican, Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.), told Fox News there were multiple factors at play.
Calling his colleague’s political downfall beyond “predictable,” he said Cassidy had long been in “trouble” with voters and that Trump’s endorsement of Letlow was just the “icing on the cake.”
Trump himself thanked Louisiana voters as he celebrated Cassidy’s conquer from Capitol Hill on social media Sunday, writing it was “nice to see that his political career is OVER!”
