Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will land in Mumbai, Maharashtra, today, marking his first official visit to India since assuming the top post. The four-day trip is being viewed as Canada’s efforts to restore bilateral ties with India.

The Canadian Prime Minister will be in India from February 27 to March 2, 2026. Ties between the two countries had taken a hit in September 2023 following allegations regarding India’s role in the killing of a Khalistan leader in Canada.

“At the invitation of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of Canada, The Right Honourable Mark Carney, will pay an official visit to India from 27 February to 2 March 2026. This will be Prime Minister Carney’s first official visit to India," the government had said.

CHECK ITINERARY

Mark Carney is set to reach Mumbai later today. He is also scheduled to visit Australia and Japan, next week.

After arriving in Mumbai, the Canadian PM will participate in separate business engagements, interact with Indian and Canadian CEOs, industry and financial experts, innovators, educators, as well as Canadian Pension Funds based in India, according to a statement from the government.

PM Carney will reach Delhi on March 1. On March 2, he will hold delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Modi at Hyderabad House, the statement said.

Both leaders will review the progress across various sectors — India-Canada strategic partnership, cooperation in trade, technology, energy, critical minerals, and more.

The two Prime Ministers will also attend the India–Canada CEOs Forum scheduled on 2 March.

“Carney’s visit to India comes at an important juncture in the normalisation of India-Canada bilateral relations. The two Prime Ministers have earlier agreed to pursue a constructive and balanced partnership grounded in mutual respect for each other’s concerns and sensitivities, strong people-to-people ties, and growing economic complementarities," the government had said.

WHY THE VISIT MATTERS?

Mark Carney’s visit to India is seen as an effort to restore diplomatic ties with India — the world’s fourth-largest economy.

The relations between India and Canada strained in 2023 after Ottawa had alleged New Delhi’s involvement in the killing of a Sikh separatist leader. In September 2023, Carney’s predecessor, Justin Trudeau, said in Parliament that there were credible allegations about India’s link to the killing of Canadian Hareep Singh Nijjar.

New Delhi had denied the allegations, accusing the Trudeau government of harbouring extremists.

The diplomatic row saw an escalation in October 2024, with the two countries engaging in reciprocal actions, involving expulsion of high commissioners and diplomats.

The political landscape changed after Liberal Party leader Mark Carney’s victory in the Parliamentary elections in 2025, paving the way for a thaw in bilateral ties.
