Two pilots were caught making animal noises — including meowing and barking — over radio communication near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Sunday (April 12), prompting an air traffic controller to step in and call for professionalism.

Audio from the exchange, which has since gone viral online, captures the pilots mimicking animal sounds while communicating over the frequency.

The interaction took place on an air traffic control frequency at the airport outside Washington, DC, according to ATC.com.

An air traffic controller quickly intervened. “You guys, you need to be professional," the controller is heard saying in the recording first accessed by TMZ.

“Meow meow meow meow," one of the pilots replied.

“Ruff! Ro-ro-ro-ro-ro!" the other responded.

As the noises continued, the controller delivered a pointed remark: “This is why you still fly an RJ," referring to regional jets, which are often seen within aviation circles as a stepping stone to larger commercial aircraft.

A report by The New York Times said the remark was met with more meows.

The Federal Aviation Administration has said it will investigate the incident after the pilots were heard making animal noises on an aviation frequency. Regulations prohibit pilots from engaging in non-essential conversation below 10,000 feet, requiring all communication to be directly related to the safe operation of the aircraft, the FAA said, according to The New York Times.

Hearing him go “meow meow meow" on an aviation frequency is insane this is exactly like when the Chinese Navy mocked U.S. military aircraft by meowing over radio channels in the South China Sea 😂 pic.twitter.com/LNdkUYSZj1— R A W S A L E R T S (@rawsalerts) April 16, 2026

Such behaviour is not entirely without precedent. In a resurfaced 2021 clip, a Chinese military radio transmission during an exchange with a US Navy aircraft over the South China Sea appeared to include a voice saying “meow" after issuing a warning.

The incident occurred near the disputed Spratly Islands, where China has built military outposts. In the exchange, a Chinese official is heard telling the US aircraft to “leave immediately and keep out to avoid any misunderstanding", to which the US pilot responds that it was conducting lawful operations in international airspace.

Moments later, a voice over the frequency unexpectedly adds, “meow", drawing attention online for the break from standard radio protocol during an otherwise tense encounter.
