A possible meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump at next month’s G7 Summit in France is generating significant diplomatic buzz, with both leaders expected to attend the high-profile gathering hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.

PM Modi is scheduled to visit France from June 15 to 17 after receiving an invitation from Macron earlier this year, while reports suggest Trump is also likely to participate in the summit at Évian-les-Bains.

Although India is not a member of the G7, it has frequently been invited to participate in the summit as a special guest nation.

If the two leaders do meet on the sidelines of the summit, it would mark their first face-to-face interaction since their White House meeting on February 13, 2025.

The potential engagement is being closely watched amid shifting global geopolitical dynamics and ongoing negotiations over the US-India bilateral trade deal.

The speculated meeting also comes months after trade tensions between India and the US over Trump tariffs, as well as repeated claims by Trump that he helped broker a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in 2025.

Trump-Modi Ties Over The Past Years

PM Modi and Donald Trump last held talks in February 2025, when the prime minister was among the first global leaders to visit the White House after Trump’s return to power.

The meeting, held amid ongoing tariff-related frictions between the two countries, saw Trump describe Modi as a “great friend", while both leaders announced ambitions to scale up bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030.

Relations, however, faced turbulence months later following the India-Pakistan war in May. Trump repeatedly claimed that his intervention and trade-related pressure had helped secure a ceasefire between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

While Pakistan publicly welcomed Trump’s role, India firmly rejected the narrative, maintaining that the understanding was reached directly between New Delhi and Islamabad without external mediation.

The two leaders were later expected to meet on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Canada in June, but the interaction did not materialise after Trump cut short his visit and departed early.

Trump subsequently invited Modi to stop over in Washington on his return journey, though the Indian side declined, citing the Prime Minister’s pre-scheduled visit to Croatia.

According to a New York Times report citing officials, there were also concerns within Indian circles that Trump could attempt to engineer an awkward diplomatic moment involving Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir, who had been invited to the White House around the same time.

Trade Deal, Trump Tariff Dominate India-US Ties

The US slapped India with a 25% reciprocal tariff, along with an additional 25% levy linked to New Delhi’s continued imports of Russian crude oil. Trump and several senior American officials criticised India over the purchases, arguing that Russian energy revenues were helping sustain Moscow’s military campaign in Ukraine.

Against this backdrop of strained ties, PM Modi skipped major international gatherings in Sharm El-Sheikh and Kuala Lumpur, events where an encounter with Trump was considered possible.

Birthday Wishes, Good Talks Reinforce Trump-Modi Bond

In September 2025, Trump publicly extended birthday wishes to PM Modi, while trade negotiations between the two countries also picked up pace. By February this year, both sides had agreed on a new framework for economic engagement, with tariffs reportedly brought down to 18%.

The two leaders most recently spoke on April 17 during a 40-minute phone conversation, which was their third interaction of the year.

During the call, Modi and Trump discussed bilateral relations as well as developments in the Middle East. Speaking to reporters afterwards, Trump said, “I had a very good talk with him, and he is a friend of mine from India, and he’s doing great."

It is amid these evolving diplomatic and economic dynamics that Modi and Trump are now expected to potentially meet again on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France.
