Former North Carolina school counselor and coach Jessica Finley gets 28 to 40 years in prison for sexually abusing a 14 year old student she groomed and exploited.

A former high school counselor in the US has been sentenced to up to 40 years in prison for sexually abusing a minor student she had been assigned to help.

Jessica Finley, who also served as a volleyball coach at McDowell High School in North Carolina, was convicted on multiple charges after admitting to engaging in a sexual relationship with a student who was underage.

According to court documents, the girl was 14 when she first approached Finley during the 2023–24 academic year seeking help for anxiety. Prosecutors said the counselor exploited the student’s vulnerability, gradually grooming her before the relationship turned sexual.

Investigators found that the two exchanged messages discussing their encounters and future plans. Authorities said several of the sexual acts took place when the student was 15, including incidents inside the counselor’s office at the school.

The case came to light after the teenager’s parents discovered the messages and reported the matter to authorities. Finley resigned from her position in February 2024 following the allegations.

The victim later told investigators that she felt pressured to continue the relationship, alleging that Finley threatened self-harm if she tried to end contact.

Finley had initially rejected a plea deal before pleading guilty to 16 charges, including sexual activity with a student and offences involving a child under 15.

She was sentenced to a minimum of 28 years and a maximum of 40 years in prison.

During the hearing, Finley apologised in court, expressing remorse for the harm caused to the girl.
