As tsunami warnings were issued in the US, Japan, and other nations following a powerful 8.7 magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, a Maui-based founder’s post about hearing a tsunami siren for the first time has stirred concern online.
“Been on Maui 11 years. My first official Tsunami siren," wrote Edward Dowd, founder of Phinance Technologies, on X (formerly Twitter). He shared a short video capturing the eerie wail of a tsunami warning siren echoing across a quiet neighbourhood, a sound he had never encountered in over a decade of living in Hawaii.
Dowd’s video comes amid tsunami alerts issued by the US National Weather Service (NWS) for coastal areas in Hawaii and Alaska. The agency warned that tsunami waves of up to three meters could hit shorelines.
“The danger can continue for many hours after the initial wave as subsequent waves arrive. The first wave may not be the largest," the NWS cautioned. Authorities in Honolulu have also announced evacuation advisories for some coastal zones.
Japan, too, issued a stark warning urging residents to evacuate from coastal and riverside regions. “Damage due to tsunami waves is expected… Waves are expected to hit repeatedly. Do not leave safe ground until the warning is lifted," the Japanese government said, as per BBC.
Dowd’s firsthand experience has added a human dimension to the escalating global concern.
