Hours after the announcement of a two-week ceasefire in the Iran conflict, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing strong criticism after the truce was announced by US President Donald Trump, triggering a political row within Israel.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid sharply criticised the prime minister. In a post on X, he said, “There has never been such a political disaster in all our history." He claimed Israel was not involved when key decisions were taken about its national security. “Israel wasn’t even at the table when decisions were made concerning the core of our national security," he said on X.

Lapid said the military had carried out all its tasks and the public had shown resilience. However, he accused Netanyahu of failing diplomatically and strategically, and not meeting any of the goals he had set. He added that the damage caused would take years to repair.

He also said none of the prime minister’s stated goals were achieved. According to him, the damage caused by “arrogance, negligence and a lack of strategic planning" would take years to fix. He added that more details would follow later.

“The military carried out everything that was asked of it, the public demonstrated amazing resilience, but Netanyahu failed politically, failed strategically, and didn’t meet a single one of the goals that he himself set. It will take us years to repair the political and strategic damage that Netanyahu wrought due to arrogance, negligence, and a lack of strategic planning," he added.

Israel backs US ceasefire move with conditions

This came after Israel supported the decision by the United States to suspend strikes against Iran for two weeks on Wednesday. However, the ceasefire does not include Lebanon, according to the prime minister’s office.

The government said it backed the move on the condition that Iran immediately reopened the strait and stopped attacks against the United States, Israel and other countries in the region.

The announcement came after Washington declared a two-week pause in attacks on Iran. The move is aimed at reducing tensions and creating space for negotiations.

Israel said it supports US efforts to ensure that Iran no longer poses a nuclear, missile or “terror" threat to the United States, Israel and Arab countries in the region. It also said Washington has assured Israel that it remains committed to shared goals in upcoming talks.

Iran has said that negotiations with the United States will begin on April 10 in Islamabad.

Two White House officials confirmed that Israel agreed to the two-week ceasefire and to suspend its bombing campaign on Iran. Meanwhile, Shehbaz Sharif, who helped mediate the deal, said the agreement also included a halt to Israel’s campaign in Lebanon.

Meanwhile, the West Asia situation continues to develop as diplomatic efforts move forward.
