Amid the ongoing West Asia crisis, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was rushed to Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center late Monday night. But what happened to the 76-year-old Israeli leader?
The Netanyahu office described it as dental treatment. However, the unannounced hospital visit has once again intensified public scrutiny over the 76-year-old Israeli leader’s health.
According to reports by The Times of Israel, the Prime Minister’s Office released a statement only after Hebrew-language media had already reported Netanyahu’s hospital visit.
Officials did not disclose the exact nature of the dental procedure.
Netanyahu’s health has increasingly become a subject of political debate in Israel following several incidents where information about his medical condition was disclosed late or only partially.
Last month, Netanyahu revealed through a social media post that he had undergone radiation treatment for a malignant prostate tumour at Hadassah Hospital.
At the time, he admitted that the information had deliberately been kept from the public because he believed Iran could have used it for propaganda during the recent conflict.
The Israeli Prime Minister did not reveal when he was diagnosed, when treatment started or when it ended.
The Times of Israel reported that Netanyahu’s announcement about the cancer treatment was accompanied by the release of his annual health report and a separate document relating to the diagnosis. However, the medical report reportedly consisted of only five short bullet points across half a page.
The document also did not mention which year it covered and reportedly carried no hospital logo or indication that it was an official medical statement.
The limited information triggered further questions over transparency regarding Netanyahu’s medical condition.
Netanyahu long medical history
The latest hospital visit adds to a growing list of medical procedures undergone by the Israeli Prime Minister in recent years.
According to reports, Netanyahu had a pacemaker implanted in July 2023. He later underwent hernia surgery in March 2024 and prostate removal surgery in December 2024.
The pacemaker episode had earlier generated controversy after Netanyahu’s office initially stated he was being monitored for dehydration. Later, the hospital confirmed that doctors had implanted a subcutaneous heart monitor and detected electrocardiogram irregularities.
Despite that, officials had assured the public that Netanyahu’s heart remained “completely normal".
The renewed attention on Netanyahu’s health comes at a sensitive time as Israel continues to face heightened tensions across the West Asia region.
The Prime Minister’s Office has not released any further details about the latest treatment or whether additional medical procedures are expected.
