New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has won hearts online after signing a playful mock “executive order" allowing children across the city to stay up late and watch the 2026 NBA Finals.
The light-hearted move came as excitement builds around the New York Knicks, who are set to face the San Antonio Spurs in their first NBA Finals appearance since 1999.
Sharing a video and photos on social media, Mamdani was seen signing the mock order alongside a group of children, who added handprints to the document.
“Today, I signed an Executive Order temporarily repealing bedtimes in the City of New York so that kids of all ages can watch our team in the NBA Finals," Mamdani wrote on X.

“As Mayor, you’re forced to make many difficult decisions. This was not one of them. Go Knicks," he added.
The mock directive, titled “Repealing Kids’ Bedtimes For Knicks Finals Run", declared that bedtimes should not prevent young fans from supporting the team during its historic championship campaign. It stated that the order would take effect immediately and remain in place until the Knicks completed — and, as the document put it, “hopefully win" — their title run.
Referring to himself as New York’s “Knicks Fan-in-Chief", Mamdani said children should be able to enjoy every moment of the finals alongside adults.
The video has attracted widespread attention online, with many users praising the mayor’s playful gesture.
