California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is fed up with the cost of President Donald Trump’s tariff war.
Newsom went on the offense after the president called him “weak and incompetent” while resurfacing his idea to levy a 100% tariff on any movies made outside of the United States in a Monday morning post on Truth Social.
Reacting to Trump’s latest scheme in a post on X, the governor wrote, “You’re already paying more for eggs, coffee, toys, shoes, electricity, furniture, cars, and flights. Now, Trump wants to raise taxes to see the movies.”
“PAY MORE AND ENJOY NOTHING,” Newsom went on. “That’s Donald Trump’s America.”
Earlier that day, the president raged about the state of the film industry while threatening a dramatic tax on foreign-made films.

“Our movie making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries, just like stealing ‘candy from a baby,’” he said, adding that California had been “particularly hard hit” because of “weak and incompetent” Newsom.
Offering a solution to what he called a “long time, never ending problem,” Trump declared he will be imposing a 100% tariff “on any and all movies that are made outside of the United States.”
The president first floated the idea of a foreign-made film tariff back in May, claiming America’s entertainment industry was “DYING to a very fast death” due to incentives other countries have offered to shoot abroad.

His proposal was short on details, however, leaving it unclear whether the tariff would only impact films shot outside U.S. borders or would include projects where any part of the filmmaking process, like editing or post-production, is not done domestically.
