The Pentagon is reportedly requiring US service members to meet strict physical fitness and body composition standards before they can receive tickets to a high-profile UFC event planned at the White House and hosted by President Donald Trump next month.
According to CNN, senior Pentagon officials have been tasked with compiling lists of military personnel eligible to attend the event. Guidance memos reviewed by the network indicate that service members must satisfy the Department of Defense’s waist-to-height ratio requirement of less than 0.55 and remain compliant with their branch-specific physical fitness standards.
The policy aligns with the Defense Department’s updated body composition guidelines introduced earlier this year, which use waist-to-height measurements as a key indicator of military readiness. Under the standard, an average American man standing 5 feet 9 inches tall would generally need a waist measurement below 37 inches, while an average woman standing 5 feet 4 inches tall would need a waist below 35 inches.
The eligibility requirements reflect Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s broader push to emphasize physical fitness across the armed forces. Speaking at Marine Corps Base Quantico last year, Hegseth said he wanted a military focused on strength and readiness, declaring there would be no place for “fat troops" or overweight senior leaders within the force.
While the Pentagon declined to comment on the specific guidance related to the UFC event, CNN reported that officials familiar with the planning process described the message as clear: attendees should present a fit and disciplined image. One defense official told the network that the selection criteria were intended to ensure military representatives “look good" on camera during the televised event.
The memos also reportedly instruct commanders to prioritize genuine UFC enthusiasts when distributing tickets and to focus primarily on junior enlisted personnel and junior officers. Although military leaders have been encouraged to seek participants from outside the Washington, DC, area, attendees will be responsible for covering their own travel expenses. The event tickets themselves will be provided free of charge.

The event, officially titled “UFC Freedom 250," is expected to be one of the headline attractions of the nationwide commemorations honoring the country’s historic milestone.
