Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Wednesday hit back at US President Donald Trump after the American leader slammed Madrid for refusing to let US planes use its bases to attack Iran and even threatened to sever all trade with Spain.

In a televised address, the Spanish leader summed up his government’s stance in three words: “No to war."

“We will not be complicit in something that is harmful to the world and contrary to our values and interests, simply out of fear of retaliation," he said.

Sánchez added, “We oppose this disaster," noting that his position was shared by “many other governments" and “millions of citizens across Europe, North America and the Middle East who do not want more war or uncertainty tomorrow."
