US President Donald Trump has reiterated that he should be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, saying he has settled wars that others could not and should be recognised for ending conflicts. This is not the first time Trump has made this argument; he has repeatedly highlighted his role in brokering ceasefires and stopping conflicts as justification for the prize.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said he could not “think of anybody in history that should get the Nobel Peace Prize more than me," adding that “nobody else settled wars." He listed a series of long-running conflicts he said had been resolved during his leadership and argued that these achievements made him more deserving of the award than others.
Trump also criticised former President Barack Obama for receiving the Nobel Peace Prize early in his presidency. “Obama got the Nobel Prize. He had no idea why," the president said, adding that Obama “didn’t do anything" to earn the honour and calling him a “bad president."
The president has made similar remarks before, arguing that his efforts to prevent and resolve conflicts, including the ceasefire between India and Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack, demonstrate his peacebuilding record. Critics have noted that some of these claims are disputed or involve situations that were not universally acknowledged as wars.
The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded annually by the Norwegian Nobel Committee to those judged to have done the “most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."
