US President Donald Trump has said the United States will not remain deeply involved in the war with Iran for much longer, while claiming that ongoing American operations have already inflicted devastating damage on Tehran’s military capabilities.

In remarks to the New York Post, Trump said the US was currently carrying out overwhelming military action against Iran.

“We’re not going to be there too much longer. We’re obliterating the s–t out of them right now, it’s a total obliteration," Trump said.

He added that while Washington’s direct involvement may not continue for long, the US still has some unfinished military objectives.

“But we won’t have to be there much longer, but we have more work to do in terms of killing their offensive, whatever offensive capability they have left," he said.

Trump Signals Exit, But Not Yet

The comments suggest that Trump is trying to project both military dominance and a desire to avoid a prolonged conflict, even as the war continues to expand across multiple fronts in West Asia.

His statement comes at a time when the US has sharply increased its military footprint in the region, including deployments of Marines, paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division, naval assets, and additional support forces.

Washington has also continued to signal that while diplomacy remains on the table, it is prepared to sustain military pressure until Iran’s retaliatory capacity is significantly reduced.

War Still Ongoing

Despite Trump’s claim of “total obliteration", Iran has continued to launch missile and drone attacks, indicating that it still retains some level of offensive capability.

Recent US and Israeli assessments have suggested that while Iran’s military infrastructure has suffered major damage, it has not yet been completely neutralised.

Trump’s latest remarks are likely to be seen as an attempt to reassure his domestic audience that the US is not heading into an open-ended war, even as military operations remain active and the risk of wider escalation persists.

For now, the message from the White House appears to be this: the US wants out — but only after it believes Iran has been hit hard enough.
