Pete Hegseth's missile claims have drawn separate fire after he said that Iran's missile and drone programs were being "overwhelmingly destroyed."

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has spent weeks making boastful claims about the Iran war telling the public that Tehran has “no air defenses," that US forces have “complete control of Iranian skies" and that Iran has been “embarrassed and humiliated." But officials told Washington Post that those claims are misleading the public and US President Donald Trump himself.
“Pete is not speaking truth to the president," one administration official told the Washington Post, adding, “As a result, the president is out there repeating misleading information."

Why Pete Hegseth’s Comments Are Being Questioned?
Iran shot down an F-15E fighter jet, leaving two American airmen stranded deep inside Iranian territory. The high-risk rescue operation that followed has become the sharpest illustration yet of the gap between Pete Hegseth’s public messaging and conditions on the ground.
Kelly Grieco, a military analyst at the Stimson Center, said the US has significantly degraded Iran’s navy, air force and fixed missile infrastructure but that the F-15 shootdown is what happens “when you have air superiority but don’t have air supremacy." US aircraft have likely been flying above 15,000 to 30,000 feet to avoid the shoulder-fired rockets that brought down the F-15, she noted.

Pete Hegseth’s missile claims have drawn separate fire after he told reporters last month that Iran’s missile and drone programs were being “overwhelmingly destroyed." But more than half of Iran’s missile launchers remain intact and thousands of one-way attack drones remain in its arsenal, according to a recent US intelligence assessment confirmed to the Washington Post by people familiar with the document.
“Documents sent around internally contradict Hegseth’s claims," one official said while another said, “If you judge Iran’s strength or weakness based on their launch numbers, that is a dumb metric. What is their objective? Are they achieving that? That’s what matters."
