Former US President Barack Obama joined New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Saturday during a visit to a childcare centre in the Bronx, where the two took part in a light-hearted singalong with preschool children. The visit marked the first joint public appearance of the two leaders.

The pair spent time at the Learning Through Play Pre-K Centre in the South Bronx, where they sang the popular nursery rhyme “Wheels on the Bus" along with children and staff.

A video from the visit, which quickly went viral on social media, shows Obama and Mamdani interacting warmly with the children, waving their hands and joining in the song’s actions, including the “squish, squish, squish" gestures.

The informal moment drew wide attention online, with users sharing clips of the former president and the New York mayor participating enthusiastically in the classroom activity.

Following the visit, Obama shared photos on social media, writing, “Great spending time with New York City’s Cutest. And thanks to @NYCMayor for giving me an excuse to break out my best ‘Wheels on the Bus’."

Mamdani also posted about the event on X, saying he and Obama read to toddlers at the centre and discussed the city’s approach to early childhood development.

“Today, President Barack Obama and I read to a group of toddlers at Learning Through Play Pre-K Center in the South Bronx. In between singing wheels on the bus, we discussed our administration’s vision for this City — one where New York’s Cutest have the strongest start possible," he wrote, along with photographs from the visit.

Mamdani, 34, is New York City’s first Muslim mayor and the youngest person to hold the office in more than a century.
