One person died and two people were injured following a shooting on Thursday at Old Dominion University in the southern US state of Virginia. The gunman opened fire in a building on the campus in Norfolk, injuring three people, the university said in a statement.

The university said police and emergency personnel “responded immediately" to the shooting incident and “the gunman is now deceased." The university suspended classes for the remainder of the day.

Two victims were transported to a hospital, where one died, while a third person, believed to also be a victim, took themselves to another hospital, according to Old Dominion Chief of Police Garrett Shelton. All three were affiliated with the university.

University President Brian Hemphill said in a statement to the school community that Old Dominion had “faced a tragedy" and thanked police and emergency responders for swift intervention. Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger wrote on Facebook that she had spoken with university leadership and was mobilizing state support to assist with the situation.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said it was investigating the incident as “an act of terrorism".

“Earlier today, an armed individual opened fire at Old Dominion University, leaving one person dead and two others wounded. The shooter is now deceased thanks to a group of brave students who stepped in and subdued him – actions that undoubtedly saved lives along with the quick response of law enforcement," said FBI Director Kash Patel.

“The FBI is now investigating the shooting as an act of terrorism. Our Joint Terrorism Task Force is fully engaged, embedded with local authorities, and providing all resources necessary in the investigation. In the meantime, please pray for the victims, their families, and the ODU community," he added.

School shootings are a regular occurrence in the United States, where guns outnumber people and regulations on purchasing even powerful military-style rifles are lax.
