At least one person has been confirmed dead and around a dozen others injured following a series of explosions at the US Steel Clairton plant in Pennsylvania on Monday, local authorities have confirmed. One person remains unaccounted for, as emergency crews continue search-and-rescue operations.
Kasey Reigner, a public information officer for the Allegheny County Department of Emergency Services, confirmed the fatality and said the number of unaccounted individuals is currently unknown. Those injured have been transported to nearby hospitals. At least five patients were taken to Jefferson Hospital, one to Allegheny General Hospital, and another to Forbes Hospital.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro stated that emergency crews are actively engaged in search-and-rescue efforts following what he described as “multiple explosions" at the US Steel Clairton Coke Works facility.

Senator John Fetterman also addressed the incident, sharing a post on Facebook in which he expressed concern over the number of potential injuries. “I was just on-site at the Clairton Coke Works. I’ve been talking with USW and US Steel officials to get more information," he wrote.
David B. Burritt, President and CEO of US Steel, confirmed that the explosion involved “coke oven batteries 13 and 14." He emphasised the company’s commitment to “the safety and wellbeing of our employees and the environment." The explosion occurred around 11 am ET on Monday, prompting the immediate deployment of emergency response teams to the site.

The Clairton plant, one of the largest coke manufacturing facilities in the US, is located approximately 35 miles southeast of downtown Pittsburgh. Burritt added, “We are working closely with relevant authorities to investigate the cause of the incident and will provide additional updates as they become available."
In a press conference, US Steel stated that the plant is now “stable," but that a formal investigation into the cause of the explosions is ongoing.
Meanwhile, the Allegheny County Health Department has advised residents living within a one-mile radius of the plant to stay indoors, close windows, and set HVAC systems to recirculate air, citing an “abundance of caution" due to potential air quality concerns.
Speaking to KDKA-TV, Clairton Mayor Richard Lattanzi said, “For anyone that works, how old or young you are, you have to work every day, you need to go home healthy, and some people are not going to see the same husband or son or somebody that’s working the mill. It’s just a sad day for Clairton."
