Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has accused the United States and Israel of orchestrating recent anti-government unrest in Iran, claiming that US president Donald Trump’s “help is on the way" remark encouraged what he called as a failed coup attempt.

In a series of posts on X Monday, Khamenei said the protests were a “sedition" planned and managed from abroad.

“The recent sedition was orchestrated by Zionists & the US," he wrote, alleging that the CIA and Israel’s Mossad had deployed their resources to destabilise Iran. “Nevertheless, they were defeated," he added.

When we say the sedition was orchestrated by the US, it isn’t merely a claim; what makes it clear that this movement was by the US are the remarks of the US President himself; he explicitly addressed these rioters and told them, “Keep going, keep going. I’m coming [to help]."— Khamenei.ir (@khamenei_ir) February 2, 2026

Khamenei pointed directly to Trump’s public comments during the protests as proof of US involvement.

“When we say the sedition was orchestrated by the US, it isn’t merely a claim," he said, referring to Trump’s remarks urging protesters to continue. “He explicitly addressed these rioters and told them, ‘Keep going, keep going. I’m coming [to help].’"

He futher went on saying, “The recent sedition wasn’t the first nor will it be the last. After all, we’re a country in friction with the interests of global aggressors. How long will this continue? Until the Iranian nation reaches a point where the enemy is left hopeless. And we will reach that point."

The Iranian leader said the unrest resembled a coup attempt aimed at destroying the foundations of governance. He claimed attackers targeted police stations, bases of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), government institutions and banks. “That is why it can be called a coup attempt," he said.

Trump had issued strong messages on January 13 backing the protests, cancelling meetings with Iranian officials and warning that those responsible for violence against demonstrators would “pay a big price".

In a post on Truth Social, he urged Iranians to “keep protesting" and wrote, “HELP IS ON ITS WAY."

The demonstrations began over rising living costs but later grew into wider anti-government protests. Iranian authorities have called them as riots fuelled by foreign powers. Tehran has also acknowledged more than 3,000 deaths, saying most were security personnel or bystanders. However, US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency has reported over 6,700 deaths, mostly protesters.

In a latest development, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has ordered the start of nuclear talks with the US, according to local media. The move comes amid heightened tensions, even as Trump said he remains hopeful of reaching a deal while warning of possible military action.
