Amid financial crisis and austerity drive, the Pakistani government on Tuesday announced its decision to cancel the Military Parade Day functions.

“In the backdrop of the ongoing Gulf oil crisis and the consequent austerity measures announced by the Government, it has been decided that the Pakistan Day Parade and associated ceremonial events shall not be held on March 23," the government said.

It further said that the day will be commemorated with dignity and reverence through a simple flag‑hoisting ceremony at appropriate levels.

“This measure is being taken to  ensure that the resilience and unwavering commitment of the nation to the ideals of Pakistan Day remain aligned with the broader austerity framework," it said.

The government said the ministries, divisions and departments have been asked to mark the day in a “solemn and respectful manner".

Meanwhile, the top Indian intelligence sources have said that the cancellation of the Pakistan Day Parade is being " assessed as a high-visibility indicator of acute fiscal stress".

“Pakistan’s cancellation of core military symbolism suggest liquidity pressure impacting even prestige expenditures," they said.

They further said that there is a “serious gap between Pakistan Army’s projected strength and its constrained economic capacity".

The West Asia oil crisis has acted as a trigger exposing Pakistan’s structural fragility and high import dependence, weak forex buffers and debt overhang are making it increasingly dependent on external factors.

Recently, the Pakistan government imposed an austerity plan to protect its economy.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved salary deductions ranging from 5 to 30 per cent for employees of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and autonomous institutions, as part of the austerity drive.

Some of the other measures included 60% of official vehicles in federal and provincial government departments off the roads during this period and ban on official foreign visits by ministers, parliamentarians, and government officials, except for obligatory trips.

The decision came as global energy prices surge following the escalation of the US-Israel conflict with Iran, which has disrupted shipping routes and driven up crude oil prices.
