Pakistan’s government is considering introducing a nationwide work-from-home policy as part of efforts to reduce fuel consumption.

Authorities are also looking at other fuel-saving measures while keeping a close watch on the impact of shipping disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s key oil transit routes. Officials say the proposal forms part of a wider plan to manage fuel use across the country, Pakistan Connect reported.

The move is also aimed at ensuring domestic petroleum supplies remain stable if regional tensions continue to affect global energy trade.

A government committee led by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb recently reviewed Pakistan’s fuel situation, including oil reserves, liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments, and cross-border supplies of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

Officials said the country currently has nearly four weeks’ worth of petrol and diesel stocks, indicating that there is no immediate shortage. Even so, the government is working on contingency plans in case disruptions to international shipping routes continue.

Provincial chief secretaries have been asked to join upcoming meetings to help coordinate possible measures. These discussions could include remote working arrangements for government offices and other sectors.

Why Is Strait Of Hormuz Important?

The review comes as rising tensions in the Gulf region have raised concerns about shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway between Iran and Oman that carries a large portion of the world’s oil shipments.

Industry estimates suggest that more than one-fifth of global oil cargo passes through the strait. Any disruption there can affect shipping schedules, increase freight costs, and delay deliveries.

Pakistan imports most of its petroleum products and depends heavily on Gulf shipping routes for its energy supplies. Officials monitoring the situation said diesel cargo from Kuwait, supplied under long-term agreements, remains particularly vulnerable to disruptions along these routes.

Reports indicate that some shipments moving through the region have been delayed due to heightened security concerns and heavy maritime traffic. Rising freight charges and a shortage of available vessels have also put pressure on global oil transport markets.

Authorities say they are also taking steps to prevent fuel hoarding or panic buying. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has allowed oil marketing companies to temporarily regulate retail fuel supplies based on historical sales patterns.

The goal is to maintain steady distribution during periods of price volatility.

Govt Weighs Fuel-Saving Measures

Officials have urged the public not to stockpile fuel, saying that supplies remain sufficient for now. Along with work-from-home proposals, policymakers are also considering other options to reduce fuel consumption if necessary.

These include possible demand-management steps, adjustments in transport use, and exploring alternative supply routes through regional energy hubs, including ports in the Red Sea and other parts of the Gulf.

Government officials say the situation is being closely monitored and that any decisions will be taken in coordination with provincial administrations.
