The situation in Pakistan is deteriorating as the Shehbaz Sharif government has announced another round of fuel price hikes, according to local media reports.

The petrol prices were hiked by PKR 4.80 per litre, taking the new price of the fuel to PKR 258.43 per litre, ARY News reported.

The prices of high-speed diesel were increased by PKR 7.95 per litre, which implies that people will be forced to buy diesel at PKR 262.59 per litre.

The Pakistani government’s latest move to hike the fuel prices comes as part of its regular fuel price adjustment. The new prices have been made effective immediately and will remain in place for the next 15 days.

Earlier, on June 1, 2025, the Pakistani government increased petrol prices by one rupee per litre, according to ARY News. The new petrol price was set at PKR 253.63 per litre, up from PKR 252.63. The diesel price stayed the same at PKR 254.64 per litre across the country.

On June 2, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) suggested several strict steps to help reform Pakistan’s financial policies before the 2025–26 budget. The IMF proposed increasing petrol and diesel prices by PKR 2 per litre for those paying in cash, while offering a PKR 2 per litre discount for payments made through debit or credit cards to promote digital transactions.

The IMF also asked Pakistan to implement a carbon tax on gasoline, diesel and vehicles powered by gasoline, ARY News reported, citing sources.

Daily expenses of Pakistani citizens are likely to increase due to a rise in transportation costs.
