What does global silence over Pakistan’s mediation in the US-Iran ceasefire indicate?
According to top intelligence sources, the effort is being seen as narrative management and not credible diplomacy, which means Pakistan is being seen as a messenger of the United States and not a peacebroker.
What did Pakistan says on the role it played
Pakistan claims it facilitated indirect talks by relaying messages, including a 15-point US proposal and Iran’s 10-point response, when direct communication was not possible. Pakistan’s PM Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir personally appealed to US President Donald Trump to hold off on a massive military strike scheduled for the night of April 7
Pakistan proposed a 14-day ceasefire framework to allow for broader negotiations and the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Sharif officially announced the ceasefire and invited delegations from both nations to Islamabad for further negotiations starting Friday, April 10, 2026.
Why countries did not acknowledge Pakistan’s role: What top intelligence sources say
“Pakistan’s role as a broker is seen as domestic propaganda. The Chinese and Russian security set up is very clear that the IRGC still controls Hormuz operations and has called the reopening reversible any time," said sources.
Major powers such as Europe, China, Russia are staying silent because Washington or Tehran have not publicly acknowledged Pakistan’s mediation, they said. “The global reaction is clear that Pakistan was a US messenger, not an independent honest broker," they said.
“Munir was said to be personally leading all night direct contacts with US Vice President JD Vance, Witkoff and Abbas Araghchi. This allowed the Pakistani military establishment to shape the framework the so-called Islamabad Accord. Moscow had earlier pushed for ceasefires at the UN with China and Pakistan has issued no prominent statement praising the Islamabad Accord. China gave joint proposals with Pakistan, but Beijing has stayed largely silent post-announcement and simply requested dialogue without praising Islamabad," said sources.
China sees the deal as Trump forcing a temporary Hormuz reopening to protect global markets not a Pakistani victory. Reports confirm the US and Iran received the proposal but framed the outcome as their own agreement, say sources.
“Welcome statements from Europe, China, and Russia were muted and they were mainly focused on lasting peace. No one gave credit to Islamabad," they said.
The world sees this as a short-term US imposed time buy to avoid major economic problems in the world. Pakistan as peacebroker claims look like domestic propaganda rather than credible diplomacy, they said.
