US forces have fired on and disabled two Iranian oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, following an overnight exchange of fire with Iranian forces, in a dramatic escalation that further threatens a fragile ceasefire and global energy security.
The incident on Friday comes as Washington and Tehran remain locked in tense negotiations over a month-old ceasefire, a possible deal to end the ongoing war, reopen the vital maritime chokepoint, and scale back Iran’s disputed nuclear programme. Despite the latest clashes, the United States maintains that the ceasefire is still in effect and is awaiting an official response from Iran to its latest proposal.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Friday he expected “a serious offer" from Iran later in the day, signalling that diplomatic channels remain open even as military tensions spike.
According to the US military, American forces disabled two Iranian tankers that were allegedly attempting to breach a US-imposed blockade of Iran’s ports. Earlier, US forces reported thwarting attacks on three Navy ships and striking Iranian military facilities in the Strait of Hormuz.
The strategic waterway has been largely blocked by Iran since the United States and Israel launched the war on Feb. 28, severely disrupting global energy supplies, driving up fuel prices, and rattling international markets. In response, Washington has imposed its own blockade on Iran’s ports, further tightening pressure on Tehran.
In a separate development, the United Arab Emirates reported another Iranian missile and drone attack. The UAE’s Defence Ministry said three people were wounded after air defences engaged two ballistic missiles and three drones launched by Iran. It was not immediately clear whether all of the projectiles had been successfully intercepted.
The US military released video footage on Friday showing the two Iranian tankers as their smokestacks were struck by an American fighter jet. Earlier in the week, a US military aircraft disabled the rudder of another tanker that officials said was also attempting to breach the American blockade.
Tensions surged further late Thursday when the US military announced it had foiled Iranian attacks on three US Navy ships in the Strait of Hormuz and carried out strikes on Iranian military facilities in retaliation. The US said none of its ships were hit in the incident.
“They threaten Americans, they are going to be blown up," Rubio told reporters on Friday, underscoring the hard line Washington is prepared to take against perceived threats to its forces and interests.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned what it described as “hostile" US military action, accusing Washington of violating the ceasefire. “Every time a diplomatic solution is on the table, the US opts for a reckless military adventure," Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote on X.
An overnight US strike also killed at least one sailor and injured 10 others aboard a cargo vessel that caught fire, according to a news agency affiliated with Iran’s judiciary. It was not immediately clear whether the vessel was one of the two tankers the US confirmed it had struck.
Despite the mounting confrontations, US President Donald Trump has insisted that the ceasefire remains in place. He has repeatedly warned, however, that the United States is prepared to resume full-scale bombing if Iran refuses to accept an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and roll back its nuclear programme.
