Rotavirus, once one of the leading causes of severe stomach illness in children, is seeing a fresh surge in the United States.

Doctors stress that while many children recover, the virus should not be dismissed because dehydration can become dangerous very quickly.
Rotavirus infections are rising across the United States, with health experts warning that the highly contagious virus can cause severe vomiting, diarrhoea and dehydration, especially in babies and young children, amid concerns over declining vaccination rates. Doctors said that the virus spreads quickly and can be life-threatening in some cases because it causes intense vomiting and diarrhoea that may rapidly lead to dehydration, particularly in infants and toddlers.

Rotavirus is a contagious virus that infects the intestines and is one of the most common causes of severe diarrhoea in babies and young children worldwide. It spreads through contact with contaminated hands, surfaces, objects or food, often after an infected person uses the toilet or changes a diaper. The virus can survive on surfaces for long periods, making it easy to spread in homes, daycare centres and schools. Though anyone can get infected, young children are considered most vulnerable.
What Are The Symptoms?
Symptoms usually begin with fever and vomiting, followed by frequent watery diarrhoea. Common signs of rotavirus infection include fever, vomiting, severe diarrhoea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, fatigue and dehydration. In serious cases, children may suffer more than 20 episodes of diarrhoea a day, making fluid loss dangerous. Signs of dehydration include dry mouth, no tears while crying, sunken eyes, reduced urination, extreme tiredness, dizziness and weakness.

Why Are Doctors Concerned?
Experts in the US said rotavirus levels have remained high since January, with rising detections in wastewater monitoring systems in several regions, including the West and Midwest. Doctors are also worried that falling vaccination rates could lead to more hospitalisations in coming years. Before vaccines were introduced, rotavirus caused hundreds of thousands of emergency room visits and tens of thousands of hospitalisations annually in the US.
Is There Treatment For Rotavirus?
There is no specific antiviral treatment for rotavirus. Care mainly focuses on preventing dehydration through oral fluids or intravenous fluids in severe cases. Most infections clear on their own within three to eight days, but some children require hospital care.
Health experts said that vaccination remains the most effective protection against severe disease. The rotavirus vaccine is given orally to infants starting at around two months of age. Handwashing, disinfecting surfaces and isolating sick children can also help reduce spread. Doctors stress that while many children recover, the virus should not be dismissed because dehydration can become dangerous very quickly.
