Russia-Ukraine War: Donald Trump threatened severe tariffs on Russia but Moscow rejected the ultimatum, calling it unacceptable.

Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.
Russia rejected pressure from US President Donald Trump who threatened to impose punishing economic tariffs if Moscow does not end its war in Ukraine within 50 days. The warning, delivered by Donald Trump during a White House meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, marks a sharp escalation in Washington’s efforts to force a ceasefire on Moscow.
Donald Trump said the US would impose “very severe tariffs"- potentially up to 100%- targeting Russia and any country continuing to trade with it. The US President said, “We’re going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don’t have a deal in 50 days. Tariffs at about 100%."
Donald Trump said the plan is part of a broader move to increase pressure on Vladimir Putin, as diplomatic efforts have failed to bring Moscow to the negotiating table. He also announced a new weapons package for Ukraine, including Patriot air-defense systems, to be paid for by NATO allies.
Kremlin Pushes Back At Donald Trump’s Threats
Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov dismissed Donald Trump’s warning as unacceptable, saying, “Any attempts to make demands- especially ultimatums- are unacceptable for us." Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the gravity of Donald Trump’s threat, saying it was “serious" and that Moscow would “take time to study it."
Economic Sanctions On Russia Imminent?
US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said that Donald Trump’s approach could involve both tariffs and sanctions, calling them “tools in his toolbox."
“You can do either one," Howard Lutnick said, signalling that Russia could face both penalties if it does not agree to a ceasefire by early September.
China Condemns Donald Trump’s Warning
China slammed Donald Trump’s attempt to target its trade with Russia. Speaking in Beijing after meeting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, China President Xi Jinping reaffirmed China’s support for deeper engagement with Moscow while Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian criticized the US threat as an example of “long-arm jurisdiction" and said Beijing “opposes any coercive economic measures."
Donald Trump Says He’s ‘Disappointed’ With Putin
The tariffs warning comes as Donald Trump expressed his growing frustration with Vladimir Putin after months of diplomatic overtures failed. The US President said that he’s “disappointed" in the Russian leader but is “not done with him" yet. The Kremlin has continued its intensified drone and missile attacks on Ukrainian cities in recent weeks.
