The Russian Foreign Ministry said that during the call, Lavrov told Araghchi that preventing any renewed hostilities in the West Asia was crucial, adding that Russia was prepared to assist in reaching a settlement.
“On April 13, Russian Foreign Minister S.V. Lavrov held a phone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister A. Araghchi. The conversation comes amid intensifying regional tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel, with Moscow maintaining close diplomatic contact with Tehran as the conflict unfolds.
Earlier on Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin also echoed similar offer to his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian that Moscow was ready to mediate a settlement to the US-Iran conflict in West Asia after the recent talks in Islamabad ended without an agreement.
The two leaders held a phone call after US and Iranian negotiators failed to come to an agreement on ending the war after 21 hours of high-level talks in Islamabad, although the two-week ceasefire holds. US and Iranian delegations held multiple rounds of ceasefire negotiations, marking the first direct talks between Washington and Tehran since 1979.
“Vladimir Putin emphasised his readiness to further facilitate the search for a political and diplomatic settlement to the conflict, and to mediate efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in the Middle East," the Kremlin said in its readout of the call.
The recent talks in Islamabad lasted nearly 21 hours and involved mediators from countries including Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt and Oman. Despite the long discussions, both sides failed to reach an agreement. However, officials said the meeting was only one step in what could be a longer negotiation process.
Iran’s Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who led his country’s delegation along with Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, blamed the US for not winning Iran’s trust despite his team offering “forward-looking initiatives".
