Russia and Ukraine on Saturday traded accusations of violating a three-day ceasefire brokered by US President Donald Trump, even as no major strikes have been reported so far. Casualties were still reported on both sides as Moscow and Kyiv continued to exchange drone strikes.
The General Staff of the Ukrainian Army said at least 51 attacks have taken place since the day of the ceasefire announcement. “In the North Slobozhansky and Kursk directions, the enemy carried out 10 shellings of settlements and positions of our troops. Two offensive actions of the opponent have been recorded," it said in a social media post.
The Ukrainian air force said Russia launched just 44 drones from 6:00 pm (local time) on Friday, one of the lowest numbers in months. “The air attack was repelled by aviation, anti-aircraft missile troops, units of REB and unmanned systems, mobile fire groups of the Defense Forces of Ukraine," it said.
On the other hand, the Russian defence ministry said that “despite the declaration of a ceasefire, Ukrainian armed groups launched attacks using drones and artillery against our troops’ positions". It did not provide the exact number of violations on Saturday.
According to local authorities, Russian drones killed two civilians and wounded three in Ukraine’s central-eastern Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions. In Russia’s western Belgorod region, three people were wounded by Ukrainian drone strikes, said governor Vyacheslav Gladkov.
Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire
On Friday, US President Donald Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a three-day ceasefire. The truce, which is scheduled to run from Saturday, May 9, to Monday, May 11, coincides with Russia’s annual Victory Day celebrations.
Posting on his Truth Social platform, President Trump revealed that the agreement includes a total suspension of all “kinetic activity" across the front lines. “Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard fought War. Talks are continuing on ending this Major Conflict, the biggest since World War II, and we are getting closer and closer every day," he said.
The US President further said that he would like to see the conflict between the two countries stop. “I would like to see it stop. It’s the worst thing since WW2 in terms of life. 25,000 young soldiers every month," he added.
Despite the President’s optimistic tone, the ceasefire comes at a time of deep-seated mutual suspicion. Both Kyiv and Moscow have previously accused one another of violating temporary truces, and neither capital has yet issued a formal confirmation to match the US President’s social media statement.
