Nancy Guthrie, 84, is a longtime Tucson resident and the mother of Savannah Guthrie, co-anchor of NBC’s Today. A widow who lived alone in the upscale Catalina Foothills neighbourhood, she has been described by her family as a “loving woman of goodness and light."
She was last seen at her home on January 31 and was reported missing the next day. As the search enters its third week, authorities say the investigation remains active and ongoing.
Who is Nancy Guthrie?
Nancy Guthrie is an 84-year-old Tucson resident who lived alone in the Catalina Foothills area. She is the mother of Savannah Guthrie, a longtime national television anchor. Family members say she was independent but had underlying health conditions requiring daily medication.
What evidence have investigators found?
Authorities say Guthrie’s blood was discovered on her front porch. Investigators have also collected DNA from her property that does not belong to her or those close to her.
Several gloves were found in the broader area, including one about two miles from her home. Those items have been sent for forensic analysis.
Who is the suspect seen on surveillance video?
The Federal Bureau of Investigation released footage showing a masked person outside Guthrie’s home the night she vanished.
The suspect is described as a man about 5 feet 9 inches tall with a medium build. He was wearing a ski mask, gloves, long pants and a jacket, and carrying a 25-litre Ozark Trail backpack. The FBI has labelled him a suspect in the case.
Investigators were initially unsure whether usable video existed because Guthrie did not have an active doorbell camera subscription, but digital forensic specialists later recovered footage.
Why are authorities concerned about her health?
Officials say Guthrie needs vital daily medication. She reportedly has a pacemaker and has dealt with high blood pressure and heart-related health issues, increasing urgency in the search.
How many tips have authorities received?
The FBI says it has received more than 13,000 tips since February 1, the day Guthrie was reported missing. Meanwhile, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department reports handling at least 18,000 calls connected to the case.
Authorities have not said whether any of the tips have led to major developments.
Where have searches and investigations taken place?
Law enforcement sealed off a road about two miles from Guthrie’s home as part of investigative activity. Multiple sheriff and FBI vehicles, including forensic units, were seen in the area.
Investigators also towed a Range Rover SUV from a nearby restaurant parking lot. Earlier in the week, deputies detained a man during a traffic stop south of Tucson and later released him. A court-authorised search was also conducted in Rio Rico.
What is known about ransom notes and family appeals?
Purported ransom notes were sent to news outlets, though two listed deadlines for payment have passed.
Savannah Guthrie and her siblings have shared emotional video messages on social media, appealing for information and promising not to give up on their mother.
