A senior Iranian official, Kamal Kharazi, who was involved in peace talks, was critically injured after his residence in Tehran was targeted in a suspected US-Israeli strike, according to reports.
Kharazi, who was reportedly involved in backchannel peace efforts and discussions with Pakistan on possible negotiations, was hit in the attack at his home.
“In today’s bombing of residential homes in Tehran by the American-Zionist enemy, Dr Kamal Kharazi was injured," reported Mehr News Agency.
Kharazi, a veteran diplomat who served as Iran’s foreign minister from 1997 to 2005 under former president Mohammad Khatami, is believed to have been among those targeted in the latest military action. According to The Times of Israel, which cited Iranian newspapers Shargh, Etemad and Ham Mihan, his residence in Tehran was struck earlier on Wednesday.
While Mehr confirmed that Kharazi sustained injuries in the attack on residential areas, it did not provide details on the extent of his condition.
The development comes amid an ongoing escalation in West Asia, following US and Israeli strikes that began on February 28. The conflict has since intensified, with Iran responding through drone and missile attacks targeting Israel and Gulf countries hosting American military bases.
Kharazi, who continues to serve as a senior adviser, had recently appeared in an interview with CNN in Tehran in early March. The interview was conducted with official permission from the Iranian government, as required under local regulations.
During the interaction, he told CNN that Iran has the capacity to sustain a prolonged conflict and added that he saw no scope for diplomacy.
