Begona Gomez, the 55-year-old wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, has been formally charged with embezzlement, influence peddling, corruption in business dealings and misappropriation of public funds- dealing a fresh blow to a socialist government already battered by a widening corruption scandal.

The court said that Begona Gomez had exploited her position as the PM’s wife to secure and manage a prestigious academic post at Madrid’s Complutense University and had leveraged public resources and personal connections to advance private interests. Her personal assistant Cristina Alvarez and businessman Juan Carlos Barrabes have also been charged in connection with the case. All three have denied any wrongdoing.

What Court Said On Corruption Charges Against Begona Gomez

In a 39-page ruling, the court drew a direct line between Pedro Sanchez’s political rise and the alleged preferential treatment his wife received. He found that “certain public decisions favourable to the [university chair], which could have been obtained through a unique exploitation of her relational position, had been taken since Gomez’s husband became secretary general of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party and, above all, since he became prime minister."

The court also described conduct at the Moncloa Palace- Spain’s official seat of government- that “seems more in keeping with that of absolutist regimes and which has, fortunately, been forgotten in our state over the years."

What Pedro Sanchez Has Said On The Case

Pedro Sanchez insisted that he remained confident his wife would ultimately be cleared. He said, “What I ask of the justice system is that it delivers justice. That justice be served. And since I’m convinced that time will put everything and everyone in their place, I have nothing more to say."

The charge against Begona Gomez lands at a particularly exposed moment for the Spanish Prime Minister as next month, his younger brother David Sanchez is due to stand trial on separate influence-peddling charges after allegedly being handed a specially created role by a socialist-led council in the south-western city of Badajoz in 2017, when his brother was already leading the Socialist Party nationally.

Compounding the government’s legal troubles, two senior former ministers are currently on trial for alleged corruption. Ex-transport minister Jose Luis Abalos stands accused, alongside his former aide Koldo Garcia and businessman Víctor de Aldama, of accepting kickbacks on public contracts for sanitary equipment during the Covid-19 pandemic.
