Sunny Chakki, son of renowned Bangladeshi singer and Awami League’s Hindu leader Proloy Chakki, has blamed jail authorities and the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government for his father’s sudden death in custody.

Proloy Chakki died while in custody at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital in northern Bangladesh on Saturday. Jail authorities said the singer had been suffering from “severe issues related to diabetes, high blood pressure, and that his condition had worsened in jail, prompting his transfer to hospital.

However, Sunny Chakki has strongly disputed the official version. Speaking to CNN-News18, he alleged that his father was tortured, mentally harassed in prison, and denied timely medical treatment, which he claims led to his death.

‘Arrest Without Warrant’

He also alleged that his father was unlawfully arrested, claiming that at the time there was no case against him and the police did not have an arrest warrant. “On 16 December 2025, my father, Proloy Chaki, was taken from our residence by the Detective Branch (DB) police… After he was taken into custody, a false case was filed against him. The said case is a political case from the year 2024," Sunny noted.

According to Sunny, the case document mentions 124 accused persons, but his father’s name does not appear anywhere in the list. Despite this, a lower court denied him bail. Sunny further alleged that while in jail, his father was subjected to “continuous mental pressure and verbal abuse" by the jailer, based on information shared by a fellow inmate.

Sunny said he first came to know about his father’s medical emergency on the morning of January 9, when a neighbour informed him that Proloy Chakki had been taken to Pabna Sadar Hospital under police custody.

“No official information was provided to our family by the jail authorities. Upon receiving the news, I immediately rushed to the hospital," he claimed.

‘Denied Medical Care’

Sunny further noted that when he reached the hospital, he found his father lying on a general bed, receiving oxygen, with a cannula attached to his hand.

Sunny said blood test reports indicated a possible heart attack, and a duty doctor advised immediate admission to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU), strictly instructing that his father should not walk. However, he alleged that instead of admitting him to the CCU, jail authorities ordered his transfer to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, around 150 kilometres away, without providing any treatment at Pabna.

During the journey, Sunny said his father’s condition worsened, with severe breathing difficulties. He further alleged that instead of being taken directly to the hospital in Rajshahi, his father was first taken to Rajshahi Jail and kept there for some time.

“At Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, my father was kept without oxygen and without a bed for nearly one hour, made to sit in that condition. When I attempted to protest, the guards behaved aggressively toward me," he alleged.

Sunny also claimed that the guards threatened him, saying that if he spoke or intervened further, his father would be removed from the hospital and transferred elsewhere.

The Awami League leader’s son alleged that necessary care for a heart patient was repeatedly denied. He said his father was forced to walk, stand and sit on the floor despite extreme breathlessness. On January 10, his condition worsened further, and he was shifted to a prisoner cell in the hospital, where he was allegedly left without proper assistance.

Sunny said his father told him, “I want to live, but they will not let me live." After intervention by a senior doctor, Proloy Chakki was finally moved to the ICU, but Sunny said it was too late by then. His last words to his son were, “Arrange my bail quickly. I want to go home."
