The Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula, became effectively impassable for commercial ships on February 28 due to rising regional tensions. This led to higher freight costs and forced countries to look for alternative routes for energy imports. For 47 days, this key route in the global energy supply chain was either closed or heavily restricted until Iran announced on Friday that the waterway has reopened.

Why Does Strait Of Hormuz Matter for India?

About 20% of the world’s oil and a large share of LPG passes through the Strait of Hormuz every day. This makes it an important route for global energy trade. India depends on imports for most of its crude oil needs and majority of this comes from Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iraq and Qatar. India is also one of the largest consumers of LPG for household use.

What Was the Impact Of Strait Of Hormuz Closure?

The disruption affected global supply chains. LPG shipments from Gulf countries were delayed or rerouted, which increased costs. When ships cannot use the strait, they take longer alternative routes, which adds both time and expense.

Freight charges increased and insurance costs for ships in the region also went up. These added costs eventually feed into the price paid by importers and, in some cases, consumers. Refiners and LPG distributors had to manage tighter inventories than usual, although the situation remained under control.

Why Is Reopening Of Strait Of Hormuz Important?

The reopening reduces pressure on global energy transport. Shipping routes can now return to normal, travel times can shorten and insurance costs are expected to ease. The extra costs caused by rerouting should also come down. For India, this should help reduce import costs for energy companies and ease some pressure on domestic fuel prices. The reopening also restores flexibility for Indian importers. With normal access through the strait, companies can again buy from a wider range of Gulf suppliers and negotiate better terms.
