A US-made Patriot II missile fired by the Taiwanese military reportedly exploded just four seconds after launch during a live-fire exercise on August 20. Meanwhile, China says it has taken “control measures” against two Philippine vessels near a disputed shoal as tensions rise in the contested waters of the South China Sea. “Control measures” were taken against Manila’s vessels deployed from the Sierra Madre, a warship grounded on the disputed Second Thomas Shoal. Beijing accused the Philippines’ ships of “deliberately engaging in provocative collisions” when approaching the China Coast Guard.
