At least one person was killed, and dozens were injured in explosions that rocked the Ukrainian city of Lviv early Sunday. Authorities have labelled the explosions a “terrorist attack".
The blasts occurred as police responded to an emergency call about an intrusion at a store near the city centre in Lviv, the regional prosecutor’s office said.
The first blast occurred after the police arrived at the spot, and was followed by another after a second crew reached the scene.
A 23-year-old policewoman was killed in the explosion. A patrol car and a civilian vehicle were damaged, the prosecutor’s office said.
About two dozen people sustained injuries, according to the Ukrainian police.
‘AN ACT OF TERROR’
Lviv’s regional prosecutor’s office said it has initiated an investigation into what it described as “a terrorist act that caused serious consequences".
However, it added that the circumstances remain unclear.“This is definitely an act of terror," Lviv mayor Andriy Sadovy wrote in a Facebook post.
“One policewoman died. My condolences to the family and close ones," he said.
According to preliminary investigation, homemade explosive devices were detonated. However, officials have yet not disclosed who is suspected of orchestrating the attack.
