Indian Embassy warns Indians visiting visa free Phu Quoc to get Vietnam visa, cites emergency travel limits, passport loss risks and exit permit delays of up to five days

From city lights to winter wonderlands, these family-friendly destinations are perfect for festive season travel.
Indians planning a visa-free trip to Vietnam’s popular island of Phu Quoc have been cautioned by the Indian Embassy about key risks that could disrupt travel.
According to the travel advisory issued by the Indian Embassy, it said that tourists from India can visit Phu Quoc Island without a visa, but the exemption comes with strict conditions. Travellers are allowed to stay only on the island and cannot enter mainland Vietnam without a valid visa, it said.
The embassy warned that this can create serious problems in emergencies. In cases such as medical needs or flight disruptions, travellers may need to move to cities like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. Without a proper visa, this can lead to delays in treatment, travel restrictions and immigration issues.
To avoid such situations, travellers have been advised to obtain a valid Vietnam visa before travelling, even if their plan is limited to Phu Quoc.
LOSS OF PASSPORT
The advisory also flagged another concern — loss of passports. Authorities noted several instances involving Indian travellers. In such cases, tourists must immediately file a police complaint and approach the Indian embassy or consulate for an emergency travel document.
However, even after getting temporary documents, travellers may face delays of 3 to 5 working days, or longer, to receive an exit permit from Vietnamese authorities. During this period, they must remain in Vietnam. The embassy has urged travellers to follow guidelines to ensure a smooth and hassle-free visit.
