US President Donald Trump was met with loud boos from sections of the crowd at Madison Square Garden on Monday as he attended Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs.

His visit, which marked the first time a sitting US President attended an NBA Finals game, also triggered extensive security arrangements that disrupted fan access and altered the usual game-day atmosphere.

Trump, a longtime Knicks supporter and a native New Yorker, watched the game from a luxury suite hosted by Knicks owner James Dolan.

The President appeared on the arena’s giant video screens during the national anthem and was greeted with a mix of reactions, though boos were clearly audible throughout the venue.

The jeering subsided once images of the American flag appeared on screen, while Knicks players received loud cheers from the home crowd.

The visit highlighted Trump’s often complicated relationship with New York City, where he built his business empire but has long faced criticism from many residents.

Reuters reported that some fans expressed frustration that his attendance overshadowed what was otherwise a historic night for the Knicks, who were hosting their first NBA Finals game in nearly three decades.

EXTRAORDINARY SECURITY PRESENCE

Authorities established an extensive security perimeter around Madison Square Garden ahead of the President’s arrival.

Fans were required to pass through multiple checkpoints and airport-style screening procedures before entering the arena.

Several blocks surrounding the venue were fenced off, while police officers, Secret Service agents and other security personnel were deployed in large numbers.

AFP reported that officials urged spectators to arrive hours before tip-off to avoid delays.

The security arrangements also led to the cancellation of a traditional watch party outside the arena.

The New York Police Department said fans without tickets would not be allowed near the immediate vicinity of Madison Square Garden, a departure from previous playoff games that had attracted large outdoor crowds.

Authorities instead encouraged fans to gather at alternative viewing locations elsewhere in the city.

Many ticket holders described confusion while navigating the restrictions.

According to the Associated Press, some fans struggled to find the correct entrances and said information from officials was limited.

Others, however, viewed the inconvenience as unavoidable given the presence of the President and the security requirements surrounding such a visit.

Reactions to Trump’s attendance varied sharply. Reuters quoted some attendees as saying the President’s presence detracted from the occasion, while others welcomed him as a fellow Knicks fan.

Some spectators said they preferred to focus on basketball rather than politics on a night that carried enormous significance for the franchise and its supporters.

Outside the arena, small groups of protesters held signs critical of Trump, while some onlookers made rude gestures as his motorcade travelled through Manhattan.

At the same time, several fans expressed excitement that a sitting President had chosen to attend such a major sporting event.

A STAR-STUDDED NIGHT

The Finals matchup attracted a host of high-profile attendees.

Reuters reported that filmmaker Spike Lee, baseball legend Derek Jeter and actor Ben Stiller were among those present.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani also attended, saying he had purchased his own ticket directly from Madison Square Garden.

The game itself carried enormous significance for Knicks fans.

New York entered the contest with a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven championship series and was hosting its first NBA Finals home game in 27 years.

Ticket prices surged to extraordinary levels, with reports indicating that entry prices exceeded the average monthly rent in New York City.
