Trump In China Live Updates: US President Donald Trump departed for China on Wednesday aboard Air Force One, marking the first visit by an American leader to the country in nearly a decade. Trump is expected to hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday and Friday, with trade set to dominate the agenda.
The discussions are also expected to cover Taiwan and the ongoing Iran conflict, both seen as major areas of tension between Washington and Beijing.
Before leaving for Beijing, Trump said he planned to have a “long talk” with Xi about Iran, although he insisted the United States did not need China’s help. “We’ll win it one way or the other, peacefully or otherwise,” he told reporters.
China draws ‘four red lines’
Ahead of the visit, the Chinese Embassy in the United States stressed that “mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation” remain the correct path for China-US relations.
The embassy also repeated Beijing’s position that four major issues in China-US ties “must not be challenged”. These include the Taiwan question, democracy and human rights issues, differences in political systems, and China’s development rights. Beijing described these matters as central to maintaining stable ties between the two countries.
China has said it is ready to work with the United States to expand cooperation while also managing differences between the two countries.
Beijing sees strategic opportunity
Chinese officials reportedly believe Beijing enters the talks from a position of strength. According to reports, China sees the costly US conflict with Iran and approaching American midterm elections as giving Beijing greater leverage.
China’s immediate aim is to stabilise the trade truce reached earlier in South Korea. At the same time, Beijing is expected to push for broader goals, including easing US restrictions on advanced technology exports and improving access for Chinese companies to American markets.
Chinese officials are also expected to press Washington to shift its Taiwan policy from “non-support” to open opposition to Taiwan independence, while seeking reductions in US arms sales to the island.
Top business leaders join Trump delegation
Trump confirmed that several top American business leaders are accompanying him on the China trip. Among them are NVIDIA chief Jensen Huang, Tesla and SpaceX head Elon Musk, Apple CEO Tim Cook, BlackRock’s Larry Fink, Boeing’s Kelly Ortberg and Goldman Sachs chief David Solomon.
Trump said he would ask Xi to further “open up” China to American businesses during the visit.
Taiwan remains a sensitive issue
Trump said he is prepared to discuss American weapons sales to Taiwan with Xi during the visit. While he did not commit to changing US policy, he acknowledged that Xi opposes such sales.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry responded by saying it would continue strengthening cooperation with the United States to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
China again made clear its opposition to US weapons sales to Taiwan, with foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun repeating Beijing’s long-standing position before Trump’s arrival in Beijing.
