US President Donald Trump on Wednesday received a red carpet welcome after he landed at Beijing airport for a crucial summit with Xi Jinping.

Trump was given a red-carpet welcome at Beijing Capital International Airport by US Ambassador to China David Perdue; Xi’s vice president, Han Zheng; China’s Ambassador to Washington Xie Feng; and Executive Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Ma Zhaoxu.

The Chinese delegation was accompanied by a military band and honour guard, and 300 youths singing a welcome message and waving American and Chinese flags.

According to New York Post, Trump, who appeared visibly pleased with the pomp and circumstance surrounding his arrival, was followed off the plane by his son Eric, daughter-in-law Lara, SpaceX and Tesla founder Elon Musk, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, War Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.

Trump gave his signature fist pump after landing at Beijing airport. RapidResponse47 shared a post on X, “POTUS proceeds down the red carpet in Beijing — briefly giving his signature fist pump to the assembled Military Honor Guard and Chinese youth flag wavers."

On Thursday, the US President will visit Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, followed by a bilateral meeting with Xi and a state dinner. Trump will meet with his Chinese counterpart again on Friday before flying back to Washington.

The bilateral discussions are expected to cover Taiwan and the ongoing Iran conflict, both seen as major areas of tension between Washington and Beijing. Trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies are expected to dominate discussions. Issues related to Taiwan, China’s rare earth export controls and broader economic ties are also likely to feature prominently during the meetings.

On Tuesday, NY Post quoted Trump claiming that Xi is expected to make a reciprocal visit to the US “toward the end of the year".
