Gavin Newsom criticized Donald Trump at the Munich Security Conference in Germany, saying "he will be gone in three years".

US President Donald Trump and California Governor Gavin Newsom
Gavin Newsom, California’s governor and likely the 2028 presidential candidate, took a jibe at President Donald Trump at the Munich Security Conference, claiming he is “temporary" and that “he will be gone in three years."
“I hope, if there’s nothing else, I can communicate today: Donald Trump is temporary. He’ll be gone in three years," Newsom told his international audience in Germany.
The official topic on Friday was climate policy and countering a warming planet, with Newsom blasting Trump for “doubling down on stupid" by gutting carbon pollution regulations.
Newsom has long projected California as a durable counterweight to Trumpism, using international forums to unleash attacks against the US President.
On Saturday, while still in Europe, Newsom plans to formalise a new partnership with Ukraine. He will be signing a memorandum of understanding with regional leaders, aimed at “advancing cooperation on economic recovery, innovation, and resilience," according to an official statement from his office.
NEWSOM AS PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE?
Newsom’s participation in international conferences — previously at World Economic Forum in Davos — is being seen as his effort to be recognised as Democrats’ highest-profile counter to President Trump.
While Gavin Newsom has not formally positioned himself as a presidential candidate, his recent high-profile appearances — including at Davos — signal that he may be projecting himself as a prominent potential challenger to Donald Trump.
“He is certainly trying to project front-runner vibes," said Democratic pollster Zac McCrary, whose Alabama-based firm was among the leading pollsters for Hillary Clinton’s, Joe Biden’s and Kamala Harris’ campaigns, as quoted by NDTV.
“And like any Democratic governor trying to run for president, you have to build your national security credentials, foreign policy chops. He’s in that phase here".
While in Munich, Newsom will also participate in a panel discussion on international alliances. The forum will equip the governor with a renewed opportunity to target Trump on a range of issues — from his handling of NATO, threats to acquire Greenland, and the military mission to capture Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
The California governor’s advisers see the trip and the Ukraine deal as a way to demonstrate and solidify California’s significance in global markets.
