Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir, seems to be enjoying close camaraderie with U.S. President Donald Trump — he emerged as a key figure in the mediation between Washington and Tehran.
Alongside Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Field Marshall Munir played a crucial role in the peace negotiations between the U.S. and Iran in Islamabad last week.
Although the talks yielded no results, he attempted to portray himself as a key mediator. The reason? He shares close ties with both the U.S. President and the Iran’s military hierarchy.
According to Fox News Digital, Munir’s relationship with the Iranian army stems from his time as Pakistan’s director general of military intelligence in 2016 and 2017, during which he began developing ties with Iran.
“He has been interacting with the leadership. He has been interacting with the intelligence community. He has been interacting with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)," Retired Pakistani General Ahmed Saeed told the outlet.

Saeed said the Field Marshall enjoys close ties with Iran’s regular army and their intelligence, adding he had friendships with former Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani and commander Hossein Salami.
While Soleimani was killed in a U.S. strike in 2020, Salami was killed in an Israeli strike in 2025.

The ‘Red Flag’ For U.S.
Bill Roggio, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defence of Democracies, told the Fox News Digital that President Trump should not trust the Pakistanis, adding that Munir’s ties to the IRGC are a “red flag" for the U.S.
“Trump should not trust the Pakistanis. Pakistan was a perfidious ‘ally’ in Afghanistan, backing the Taliban while pretending to be our friends. Munir’s ties to the IRGC should be a massive red flag for the Trump admin", Roggio said.
On Saturday, Asim Munir concluded a three-day visit to Iran aimed at securing a negotiation. According to a statement by the Pakistani military, he met Iran’s top leaders and negotiators during his visit.
A next round of peace talks between the U.S. and Iran in Islamabad is scheduled to be held on April 20.
